The Core Standards for SEND are Somerset’s published expectations for all education settings regarding the provision for special educational needs and disability (SEND) for children and young people 0-25 years. They are specifically about what we do that is universal (for everyone) and targeted (for some children and young people) and provide clear information about what is expected for children and young people with special education needs or disability.
This is a wide ranging piece of legislation designed to give greater protection to vulnerable children and young people. Key elements of the Act are changes to the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system, to be effective 1 September 2014. There will also be a new legal duty on schools to better support children with medical conditions. The Act extends the SEN system from birth to 25, and gives children, young people and their parents greater choice and control in decisions, ensuring needs are properly met.
It is a statutory requirement of all local authorities to publish a ‘Local offer’, showing the support available to all children and young people with SEND and their families.
